Pistachio Milk

The mysterious 137 °C Pistachio milk, is it any good?

There is a lot of talk these days about alternative milks. Some people choose alternative milks for health or lifestyle reasons and some choose them to switch things up from the regular milk options out there.. but did you know there is in alternative milk that is unlike the others? Something based on a magical nut we are quite fond of here?

Yeap, you guessed correctly. That alternative milk is… pistachio milk ! – and today, at I love pistachio, we bring you our first review ever of pistachio milk.

The Product and packaging

The product is a 1000ml carton of milk, which is basically a liter. We’re not sure why they didn’t label it as 1 Liter of milk. That’s not the strangest thing about this product though. The more we look at it, the stranger it becomes. The first label staring from the top is a huge double-bordered square with the title 137 °C degrees.

Why 137 °C degrees exactly? Well, some intense research led us to learn about the significance of this number as a denominator of the fine-structure constant, a constant extremely interesting and important to physicists  and “one of the key physical constants of the universe”according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The brand could be related to the magical constant or it could be something else. If you know, leave us a comment.

Now, for the the actual name of the product. Real pistachio milk with a tad of sweetness from organic coconut flower nectar. A tempting description indeed. With fake orange juices usually branded as nectars and full of sugars, the word can have some negative associations; however a tad of sweetness from organic coconut flower nectar definitely piques the interest.

The rest of the package shows a bunch of pistachios and flowers that look like frangipanis but probably aren’t, a “stamp” (with 3 stars) informing the consumer that MORE NUTS TASTIER, and some actually useful information such as carrageenan, gluten, dairy, and soy free labels.

Overall, it’s a nice looking package, you can definitely tell it’s not a traditional milk. While not very minimalist or modern, it gets the message across and the chosen colors are harmonious with a nice blue color on the sides of the package and possibly intentional use of fonts and weights to add impact to text.

One of the sides of the of the milk carton is pretty with a few pistachios flying over a field and taking a smooth pike dive into a tall glass of milk adorned with promises of deliciousness, happy bellies, minerals, and good health.

Since this was purchases in Australia, a crude sticker was put on top with the actual regulated nutritional information card with the full ingredients, a made in Thailand label, and the always hilarious disclaimer that the product may contain traces of nuts. The ingredients list confirms that Pistachio Kernels make up 13% of the milk in addition to cashew nuts, sunflower seeds, and 1% in organic coconut flower nectar.

So we know that this dairy-free vegan halal “milk” ticks many of the boxes for a lot of people but let’s look inside.

What does is smell like

The smell of this pistachio milk is deep and pistachio-y. It’s a very interesting smell, rich and sweet almost like a meal rather than a traditional milk.

How does it pour?

When pouring milk in a tall glass, what does one look for really? We look for a consistent blub blub blub that feels nice and heavy. This milk pours nicely, with a heavy blub blub blub. A bit more dense than regular milk but definitely a satisfying pour. One has to get used to the weight as to not over-our and spill milk everywhere.

Have a look at our instagram story below for a video of how it pours before we figure out how to embed it directly in the blog:

What does it taste like

The taste is a bit peaty, a bit like a sweet protein shake but a much nicer texture. You can definitely taste the coconut but it doesn’t really taste like a milk more like a sweet shake. It tastes good but we don’t think it can replace the basicness of traditional milk and the neutrality of it.

However, it certainly proudly takes its place amongst the many milk alternatives by providing a beverage that is satisfyingly sweet, and frankly, somewhat palatable. It’s not something we would drink everyday that’s for sure, but once in a while, why not? The creamy texture, the note of coconut, and the potential health benefits (compared to regular milk) might be a good tradeoff for some. Overall we give this one we give this one 4 pistachios over 5 !
